AUDE. Adrien, Baron LUILLIER DE ROUVENAC, Former Officer, pr - Lot 330
AUDE. Adrien, Baron LUILLIER DE ROUVENAC, Former Officer, proprietor in Rouvenac (Aude) and Deputy of the Nobility to the Estates-General by the Sénéchaussée of LIMOUX in 1789 - Autograph letter signed in VERSAILLES on May 12, 1789, addressed to Monsieur De CASSAIGNEAU DE BRASSE in LIMOUX (Aude). 3 pages in-4°: I have just received the letter... with the legal verbal of my nomination to the Deputation of our Sénéchaussée. The Estates-General were opened on the 4th with a mass, a speech by the Bishop of Nancy and a grand procession in which everyone was dressed in the costume of their Order... the following day, Tuesday, another General Assembly. The King (Louis XVI) gave a speech, the Keeper of the Seals another which no one heard, and then came Mr Necker's speech, which was very long. All three were printed, and distributed only in the morning to the three Orders (the Clergy, the Nobility and the Third Estate)... We have in the Estates-General the most zealous destroyers of the Province, and certainly they put the greatest heat to the annihilation of the States of Languedoc but it is not yet time to make motions in this regard, because the Assembly is still only imperfectly constituted since the Deputations from Paris have not arrived, and they lack other provinces, Roussillon is among them. The beautiful Constitution of the Dauphiné will occupy us first. The opposition party has given us each a brief of more than a hundred pages. It remains for me to examine it in order to form an opinion on the major issues presented in the brief... We will therefore demand the destruction of the Estates (-Généraux), we believe we cannot fail to obtain it. This is the opinion of all Languedocians; the King (Louis XVI), however, it is said in Mr. Necker's speech, wishes to bring happiness to his people without arousing any legitimate claims...
