École italienne du début du XVIII° siècle - Lot 13
École italienne du début du XVIII° siècle Astronomer and his disciple Web 130 x 94,5 cm By the beauty of his double subject, knowledge (the astronomer learns by looking at a map) and the transmission of knowledge (the astronomer teaches his assistant), our painting is part of a series of works in Italy and Holland between the 17th and 18th centuries. The relationships between the two characters (the assistant slightly in the background, the head straight, the scientist and his leaning head) are studied here in a surprising and powerful way. The sobriety of the almost monochrome colour and the light coming from the left illuminating the globe illustrate the scientific progress of Italy at the beginning of the 18th century.
