Raphaël, d'après - Lot 91
Raphaël, d'après The Transfiguration Medallion in gilded brass, repoussé treated L 7.8 cm Provenance: Private collection, 16th century The round plate as a medallion has two distinct narrative parts. The upper part shows the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, Christ floating in front of illuminated clouds, between the prophets Moses and Elijah. Below, on the top of the mountain, the Apostles Saint Peter, Saint James the Great and Saint John the Evangelist lie down, covering their faces, blinded by the light. According to the Bible, this episode takes place after the multiplication of the loaves, at the moment when the disciples recognize in him the Messiah. During the feast of tents, he would have gone to Mount Tabor with his disciples Peter, James and John and would have metamorphosed. His face changed and his clothes became bright white in the presence of Moses and Elijah, on the right, recognizable by the tables of the law he held between his arms. The painting (405 x 278 cm) was seized by Napoleon Bonaparte, then Chief General of the Italian Army, who was then returned to Päpe Pius VII and returned to the Vatican in 1817.
