SAY (Jean Baptiste) Lyon 1767 - 1832
Economist, Tribunals. He accompanied Bonaparte to Egypt, he was one of the masters of the Doctrine of Free Trade; his books on Political Economy were for a long time authoritative throughout the world.
Letter A.S. "J.B. SAY" from Paris on 30 Brumaire Year 12 (22 Nov. 1803), addressed to Mr Michel DE LA ROCHE at the home of Messrs ROUX BARDÉ et Cie, in GENEVA (Léman) from 3pp in-4°. "«... I am strongly asked to take an interest and even to take the main part, the Management, in a factory near Paris. I know the bottom line. I threw the fees and the income; the profits are slim... The most tempting thing about this case is the improvements that could be expected through smart management. I am well aware that a wise mind takes advantage of bonuses when they occur, but does not make them the basis of its expectations... I wanted to save time and delay taking a stand until you get back and I could consult you. This is not possible, I am under pressure to decide... I wish and have no doubt that you will fulfill the views that made you go to Geneva. If they are limited to the pleasure of seeing old acquaintances, I am sure of the welcome you will have received. You will tell me what people think of my Treaty on Political Economy; I rely on your friendship to contribute to my success through your speech. I don't give you any news of your family assuming they don't let you miss them. I saw them before yesterday and yesterday I was at the opening of the school with Alphonsine who was very well. I send my best regards and wish you a speedy return."
