BEAUFORT (François de Vendôme, Duke of) Grandson of Henri IV. First cousin of Louis XIV. During the Fronde, he led Mazarin's enemies. He was nicknamed "le Roi des Halles". Governor of Paris. Grand Master and General Superintendent of Navigation in 1658. In 1664 he was in charge of an expedition against the Barbarians. (Paris 1616 - Killed in 1669).
Exhibit signed on his letterhead as "Superintendent General of Navigation and Commerce of France, Generalissimo of His Majesty's Naval Armies." - Commission of Lieutenant de Vaisseau Garde Côte to Sieur HERPIN, made in Paris on December 24th 1667, "to serve in the maritime coastguard of Ponant and to escort and preserve the merchant ships belonging to his subjects, under the authority and orders of Sieur LANGUILLET Captain commanding the Vaisseau du Roy named ST JEAN DE BAYONNE...".
