MARINE 1677. HOLLAND WAR. Letter A.S. Damien de MARTEL (1607-1681), naval officer, to Tolon (TOULON) on April 12, 1677, on the War of Holland. "Monseigneur. Seeing that some stagecoaches could be made to the ships of Mr. d'ALMÉRAS and mine. They would not be ready until the end of this month. I'm working night and day on the five ships to get their supplies and spare parts on board, which will be ready by the end of this week. If the Count de VIVONNE acts on the proposal I have just made to him to join the galleys which the King is currently having his five ships armed to go and fight the Dutch ships which are in the Liorne bay, of which the King's letter gives me notice and which is confirmed by the latest news we have. I am embarking on one of these ships for this Expedition while waiting for my Officers to complete the arming of my ship. I await the answer on the first day that I will make my resolution, I beg you to believe that there is not a moment lost to do the diligence that the King wishes..."
