YVELINES. "View and perspective of the Salon de la Ménagerie - Lot 182
YVELINES. "View and perspective of the Salon de la Ménagerie at Versailles, seen here from behind in the middle of seven courtyards filled with rare birds and other animals from various distant lands." In Paris, at Jean's, rue de Beauvais, N°32 - 18th century engraving (36 x 53). Ancient colours. Traces of posters.
Today disappeared, the Menagerie is the first creation of Louis XIV in Versailles. It quickly became a place for strolling and entertainment and, later, the King gave it as a gift to the Duchess of Burgundy. Built by Louis Le Vau and refurbished by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, it consists of a pavilion around which seven enclosures welcome birds and exotic animals that delighted visitors before being studied by the Academy of Sciences.
