MIRABEAU (Honoré-Gabriel RIQUETI, Count of) The Great Tribun - Lot 255
MIRABEAU (Honoré-Gabriel RIQUETI, Count of) The Great Tribune. Deputy of the THIRD PARTY to the States-General by the Seneshaussée of AIX. (Le Bignon, LOIRET 1749 - Paris 1791). Autograph letter signed "MIRABEAU", written from NYONS (DRÔME), October 12, 1782. A page in-4° - Beautiful laudatory letter, addressed to a friend: "If it is true my dear Friend, that the greatest peace of mind, the greatest contentment of the soul, the sweetest sensations, are the interior price of virtue, you must be happy...ah ! my dear friend ! That fate, that appearances at least no longer destroy this sweet illusion, and that a venerable and long old age may follow your vigorous autumn!...Here I am, then, among the men filled with your blessings! that it would be sweet of me to owe you gratitude...perhaps I needed such a sacred duty to sustain me in the rough career in which I resolved to walk. Yes my dear Robert, I must win back my family and my wife (in the same year she asked for separation and obtained it in 1783), because it is the almost unique way to acquit myself towards you what do I say to acquit? The pecuniary debts are liquidated, but there are debts that cannot be paid; ...and everything that belongs to you now has unlimited rights over my services... I will write to you only from Provence unless something happens, My dear Master, you will be kind enough to ask me in detail in what and how I could be useful to your views and discoveries...".
