OLERON ISLAND BEACONS. 1783. Copy of time of the letter of Mr the Marshal of CASTRIES, to Mr COMPERE LAUBIER dated of Fontainebleau on November 18, 1783.
Mr COMPERE-LAUBIER, Merchant of the Ile d'Oléron, Vice-Consul of Spain, is the author of a project to establish beacons on the southern coast of the Ile d'Oléron. "The result of the examination of your project to establish beacons on the coast of the Ile d'Oléron, Sir, is all in your favour. This project is good and of easy execution and desired by the healthiest part of the inhabitants: the coves which you indicated to be used as shelter for the buildings beaten by the storm or pursued by the enemy exist, in spite of the assertions recognized false of your contradictor and I order the establishment of these beacons... His Majesty grants you the exclusive privilege of selling for your benefit the map which has been drawn up of the indicative coast of the beacons and the coves of shelter; This map will be engraved and printed at the expense of the King..." - 1p ¼ in-folio.
