Nasa. The HUBBLE telescope observes here a rare type of star - Lot 306
Nasa. The HUBBLE telescope observes here a rare type of star whose atmosphere contains more carbon than oxygen. Because of its low surface gravity, half of the total mass of a carbon star can usually be lost by strong stellar winds. As it begins to run out of fuel, it becomes unstable. Every few thousand years it spits out a nearly spherical envelope of gas when a layer of helium around its core begins to melt. The gas ejected during the star's last eruption is clearly visible in this photo as a faint bubble of gas surrounding the star. Period chromogenic print. Caption on label on the back. 25.5 x 20.4cm with margins.
