1785. BORDEAUX (33). STRAY DOGS. "Order of MM. the Mayor, Lieutenant-Mayor and Jurats, Governors of BORDEAUX, Criminal and Police Judges" (Heading, vignette in the Coat of Arms). Bordeaux on April 23rd 1785. "... we meet day & night, in all the streets of the City, a multitude of dogs, which most of them throw themselves on the passers-by, & often cause them unfortunate accidents... the extreme drought can make one fear that rabies will be born in these animals...". They enjoin all the inhabitants of BORDEAUX who have Dogs at home, to keep them locked up & tied up in their houses; make them inhibitions & forbidden to let them go out & wander in the streets, under any pretext whatsoever, under penalty of 200 pounds of fine...; Order that all the dogs which will be met wandering in the streets & abandoned to themselves, will be killed on the spot...".
