OIL LAMP WITH TWO SWIRLING BEAKS, HANDLE BENT INTO A GRIFFIN - Lot 421
OIL LAMP WITH TWO SWIRLING BEAKS, HANDLE BENT INTO A GRIFFIN PROTOME AND MEDALLION DECORATED WITH A SEAHORSE. Terracotta. L about 17cm. Broken and glued. Romano-Byzantine or Lower Roman Empire style. Lamp of Etruscan or Hellenistic Orientalist inspiration. The Seahorse is the steed of Poseidon's chariot, a psychopompe animal like the Griffon, an apotropaic fantasy animal (diverting evil influences). Body of a winged lion, head of an eagle, horse's ears, on the forehead an emerald tiara, the Hellenistic Griffin is inspired by the imagery of oriental monsters; bronze subjects adorned the cauldrons dedicated to the sanctuaries.
