Eyriès M.J.B. DENMARK - Published in Paris, by Firmin Didot frères, in 1846. Containing 24 engravings and covered with a half saddleback binding with ribbed spine decorated with gilt floral boxes and titling. A fairly well-preserved copy: some rubbing on the headdresses. Solid hinge. Fairly fresh inside, with a wet spot on the first pages and some light freckles. Jean-Baptiste Eyriès, born in Marseilles on 24 June 1767 and died in Graville near Le Havre on 13 June 1846, is a French geographer. Eyriès, who was gifted with a prodigious memory and spoke nine languages, published several geographical works and translated from English, German and Scandinavian languages many stories of travellers and explorers. He also contributed to Conrad Malte-Brun's Annales des voyages de la géographie et de l'histoire, to the Biographie universelle of Louis-Gabriel Michaud, to Léon Renier's Encyclopédie moderne, to the Encyclopédie des connaissances utiles and to the collection of Costumes, mœurs et usages de tous les peuples. He is also the director, with Conrad Malte-Brun, of the Journal des Voyages, to which they will join Philippe Lasnon de la Renaudière as a collaborator.
