Johannot Tony /Reybaud Louis - Lot 133
Johannot Tony /Reybaud Louis JEROME PATUROT - Popular edition illustrated by Tony Johannot, in text and full page. Published in Paris, by Michel Lévy frères, in 1849. Covered in a half-basane binding with smooth spine. Well preserved copy: insulated spine lengthwise, solid hinge. Fresh interior with a few light freckles. Louis Reybaud, born in Marseilles on 15 August 1799 and died in Paris on 26 October 1879, was a French economist, journalist, man of letters and politician. The publication of his Études sur les réformateurs contemporains ou socialistes modernes (Studies on Contemporary Reformers or Modern Socialists) had just been completed. In 1843, he published a satirical and social novel with the definitive title Jérôme Paturot à la recherche d'une position sociale (Jerome Paturot in Search of a Social Position), which was immediately a great success. He followed this novel with several others in the same vein, which the public, however, judged much less successful. It shows such prodigious fruitfulness that the indulgent J. Simon, even in a posthumous eulogy, admits that he would sacrifice fifty volumes of the complete work and regretted little more than forty others.
