Labitte Charles - Lot 139
Labitte Charles DE LA LIGUE - Second edition, corrected from the author's manuscripts. Published in Paris, by Durand, in 1866. Covered with a bound cover. Fairly well-preserved copy: some rubbing on the headdresses, cracked bit, corner of the second horned plate. Fresh interior with light freckles. The Catholic League, Holy League or Holy Union is the name given during the Wars of Religion to a party of Catholics whose aim was to defend the Catholic religion against Protestantism. Its success was such that it became a danger to the monarchy. In 1588, it succeeded in driving King Henry III out of the capital. The League gradually declined in the face of the victories of King Henry IV. It was one of the greatest dangers facing the French monarchy before the advent of absolutism, along with the Fronde in the following century, whose protagonists kept the League in mind as a model or a repellent.
