Rémusat Paul de - Lot 232
Rémusat Paul de Memoirs of Madame de Rémusat. New edition, complete in three volumes (413 + 420 + 416 pages). Published in Paris, by Calmann Lévy, in 1880. Covered in a green half-cornered half-circle binding with smooth spine decorated with a red title coin and original covers preserved. Well preserved set: Pages a little yellowed with some light foxes. Claire Élisabeth Jeanne Gravier de Vergennes, Countess of Rémusat, born on 5 January 1780 and died on 16 December 1821, was a French woman of letters and wife of Auguste Laurent de Rémusat. During the Empire, Claire de Rémusat was attached to Empress Josephine as lady of the palace. The sympathy that the sovereign gave her allowed her husband to be appointed first chamberlain to the emperor and then Grand Master of the wardrobe and in 1807 Superintendent of the Imperial Theatres. An intelligent and subtle woman, admired by Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, she left remarkably well-written Memoirs and an essay on the education to be given to young girls.
