SCEVE Maurice (PARTURIER Eugène)? DELIE OBJECT DE PLUS HAULTE VERTU - "Critical edition with an introduction and notes published by Eugène Parturier" Reprint from the 1544 work, Lyon chez Sulpice Sabon for Antoine Constantin. Nice copy on Holland. Contents: Introduction. Bibliography of the writings of Maurice Scève - Bibliography of the works cited in the notes - Delie object de plus haulte vertu - L'ordre des figures et emblems - Table and index of all the dizains by the order and mesme nombre d'unchascun - Lexicon His major work was published almost anonymously (portrait and initials of the author only) in 1544. Délie is dedicated to a woman loved with an impossible love, often identified with Pernette du Guillet, whose Rymes testify to a true poetic dialogue with Scève, notably through the presence of two anagrams of her name. Délie is a long collection of 449 dizains in decasyllables, preceded by an eight and separated by 50 "emblems". Each emblem is composed of an engraving, a motto, i.e. the motto that the engraving illustrates, and a geometrically shaped frame. The engravings deal with a mythological or familiar subject. Each emblem gives its theme to the following tenth. The first emblem appears after the fifth dizain, then there is an emblem every nine dizains (at the top of the page, every fourth page). A vol. in-8 of lxxix-347pp; complete. Half-brown, ribbed spine with the title and author in gold lettering. Covers and spines preserved. A portrait out of text. Spine past, otherwise well preserved binding. Inside fresh and clean, free of freckles. Margins partially unbroken. In good condition.
