CESAR (Constantine) the XX books...to which are treated the good teachings of agriculture. Translated into French by Antoine Pierre...Poitiers, at the Enseigne du Pélican, 1545. In-12 speckled calf from the 18th century, back with ornamented nerves (a split hinge, worn head cap and corners, some russet leg. and spots, small angular moulding and beginning of flight). 22 ff.n.c., 219 ff. The 20 books of the Geoponics were composed in the 10th century by order of Emperor Constantine VII, mainly from the work of the Greek agronomist Cassianus (3rd c.). This compilation, one of the only rural encyclopaedias to have reached us since antiquity, was first published in Basel in 1539 and translated into French for the first time by Antoine Pierre (known as Pierre de Rieux) for the 1543 edition published by Enguilbert de Marnef.
