DESLYONS (Jean): Treat singular and new against the paganism - Lot 191
DESLYONS (Jean): Treat singular and new against the paganism of Roy-Boit... Paris, widow C. Savreux, 1670. In-12 red morocco from the 18th century, smooth decorated spine, roulette on the plates, dominating paper endpapers, gilt edges, Gabriel Barthelemy's ex-libris armorié, old annotations on the title (the last unencrypted ff. is missing). First edition. Uncommon. This is the second book devoted by the author to this subject. The feasts of the Eve of the Kings, or of the Bean and the Roy-Boit, or of the Eve of the Epiphany, where one was banqueted to the cries of the King drinks, are very old and are still present today in the popular form of the galette des rois. Jean Deslyon, a theologian, sets out in this work on a crusade against these pagan feasts, seeking to prove that originally, people fasted on the eve of Lent and that these pagan smells came to us from the Romans and Saturnalia. Beautiful copy in old morocco.
