GACON (François) : The poet without a face. Containing satir - Lot 52
GACON (François) : The poet without a face. Containing satires, epitres, epigrams, on all kinds of subjects. Chez Paul, à Libreville 1698, In 12 (9x16,5cm), (16) 222pp. (4) (7) bound in full contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed and spotted. New enlarged edition, after the original published in 1696 (222p. for this edition, against 191 in that of 1696). A collection of satirical poems, often particularly biting, denouncing the foibles and mores of 17th century society; the public especially retained the frank attacks against his literary colleagues, especially Boileau, La Motte, Bossuet and J.B. Rousseau. Although the genre of satirical poetry fell into oblivion in the 19th century, it was very much in use, especially in the 17th century, when literature often lacked the freedom to express itself, and satirical poetry thus collected criticism against society, long before it was found among the philosophers of the Enlightenment. Nice copy, without the frontispieces of the 3 parts but enriched with 7 bound in-fine cartoons, making it unique.
