In-8 contemporary brown half-basane, smooth spine decorated (brown spots and small brown stain on the first 5 ff.) VII - 364 pp. First edition, rare. Charles Lafontaine (1803 - 1892), after failing as an actor, devoted himself to hypnotic-psychic research, becoming a great hypnotist or mentalist. Swiss by birth, he travelled through many countries astonishing the whole world. He was one of the initiators of mesmerism or hypnosis with James Braid, whom he met for the first time in Manchester on November 13th 1841. James Braid (1795 - 1860), a Scottish neurosurgeon, made important advances in the field of hypnosis, a term he coined. Braid became interested in mesmerism in November 1841, after attending a demonstration by Charles Lafontaine. Copy enriched with a letter from the author to Captain Hommey. Louis-Joseph-Félix Hommey, lieutenant of frigate on May 15, 1834, lieutenant of ship on November 1, 1843, captain of frigate on November 29, 1856, retired on August 16, 1859, lieutenant-colonel of the 82nd regiment of mobiles on November 2, 1870, in the army of BOURBAKI, interned in Switzerland.
