First edition of this historical novel by Auguste Barbier (1805-1882) written in collaboration with Alphonse Royer (1803-1875). It is a painting of the Paris of the early 16th century in a studied style: "Rabelais, Marot, Margueritte de Navarre, Bonaventure des Périers, Fleurange, the Dubellays, and the admirable historian of the knight Bayard, have especially contributed to the composition of this book, because they were writing precisely at the time when the action takes place.
