THE GOBELINS 1671. ÉBENISTE ET MARQUETER DU ROI LOUIS XIV & - Lot 88
THE GOBELINS 1671. ÉBENISTE ET MARQUETER DU ROI LOUIS XIV & de Charles LEBRUN (1619-1690) Painter and Decorator of the King. Set of 2 receipts on vellum (16 x 22 cm), partly printed, delivered, at the Gobelins, in October and December 1671 to Renée GOMBAULT, widow of Jacques SOMMER (died in 1669), ordinary Cabinetmaker of the King, living at the Hotel des GOBELINS, by Charles LE BEGUE, treasurer of the Buildings & Gardens of His Majesty for the supply of two times 3 panels of ebony parquet and marquetry with brass, each of 3 feet in square, "which are completed except for the poliment", "made for the service of His Majesty, which she handed over to Monsieur LE BRUN, first Painter of the King.» It is specified that the said widow did not know how to sign. (It is Philippe POITOU, pupil of BOULLE, who will take over the workshop of SOMMER, becoming in 1683 Marqueteur du Roi, perpetuating the tradition of the marquetry floor associating ebony and brass).
