MIRABEAU (Honoré-Gabriel RIQUETI, Comte de) The great Tribun - Lot 256
MIRABEAU (Honoré-Gabriel RIQUETI, Comte de) The great Tribun. Deputy of the TIERS to the States-General by the Sénéchaussée of AIX. (Le Bignon, LOIRET 1749 - Paris 1791) : Autograph letter signed "MIRABEAU", written from NYONS (DRÔME), October 12, 1782. One page in-4° - Beautiful eulogistic letter, addressed to a friend: "If it is true my dear Friend, that the greatest peace of mind, the greatest contentment of the soul, the sweetest sensations, are the interior price of the virtue, you must be happy...ah! my dear friend! May fate, may appearances at least, no longer destroy this sweet illusion, and may a venerable and long old age succeed your vigorous autumn!...Here I am, then, among the men who have been showered with your benefits! How sweet it would be for me to owe you gratitude...Perhaps I needed such a sacred duty to sustain me in the rough career in which I have resolved to walk. Yes, my dear Robert, I must win back my family and my wife (in the same year she asks for a separation and obtains it in 1783), because it is the only way to repay you, or should I say to repay? Pecuniary debts are settled, but there are inacquittable debts; ...and everything that belongs to you now has unlimited rights to my services... I will only write to you from Provence unless, my dear Master, you would like to tell me in detail in what and how I could be useful to your views and your discoveries...".
