NASA. Beautiful and rare first view of the space shuttle CHALLENGER (Mission STS-7) whose silhouette is perfectly outlined by the darkness of space. The picture was taken with the "Free-flying Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS-01). The Shuttle's payload bay is clearly visible, as are the protective cradles for Telesat's Anik C2 and Palapa B communications satellites, NASA's Office of Space and Earth Applications (OSTA-2) pallet, the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) and the KU-band antenna. The STS-7 astronaut crew with the RMS arm then retrieved the SPAS and returned it to the stowage position in the payload bay for return to Earth.
