1750. LANGUEDOC. BANISHMENT OF THE BEGGARS. "Declaration of the King (Louis XV), concerning the Beggars. Given at FONTAINEBLEAU (77) on October 20, 1750 - in 5 Articles: "1°) Let us enjoin all Beggars, both men and women, to take a job incessantly to subsist, if they do not prefer to withdraw to the place of their birth or their home... 3°) The Beggars who will be arrested asking for alms with insolence, those who will falsely claim to be soldiers, who will be bearers of leaves which would not be true, feigning illnesses... who would have gathered above the number of four or who will have been found armed with rifles, pistols, swords, iron sticks or other weapons, & those who will be found scourged with a fleur de lys, the Letter V. (Thief), or other infamous mark, will be condemned... for able-bodied men, to the Galleys for at least 5 years, & with regard to women or invalid men, to the whip inside the General Hospital, & to a detention in the said Hospital, for time or for life...". followed by the Ordinance of Jean LE NAIN Intendant of LANGUEDOC, Done in MONTPELLIER (34) on December 26, 1750 - Printed in Montpellier, by Augustin-François Rochard, only Printer of the King. 1750.
