WARS OF THE VENDÉE. Decree of the NATIONAL CONVENTION of May 4, 1793, year 2, bearing that there is no reason for any indictment against General WESTERMANN,..." N°822. François-Joseph WESTERMANN, born September 5, 1751 in MOLSHEIM (Bas-Rhin, Alsace), guillotined April 5, 1794 in Paris, is a Brigadier General of the French Revolution, remained famous for the atrocities he committed during the Wars of the Vendée. He was appointed Adjutant General by the Executive Council, whose leader was Danton, who sent him, after the September massacres, on a secret mission to Dumouriez in the Armée du Nord. Arrested after the treason of this one, he comes to protest before the Convention and is released on May 4, 1793.
