Nasa. Rare. Superb takeoff of the SM-65 missile. The SM-65 Atlas or Atlas I is a missile built by Convair, a division of General Dynamics. It was the first of a series of nuclear-powered ICBMs and served as the basis for American military and civilian satellite launchers. The project began in 1946, following the capture of a document from Germany, then defeated after World War II, at the request of the USAF, which was looking for a craft capable of flying between 2,400 and 8,000 km while carrying a nuclear charge. Circa 1955.period silver print. Stamped "U.S. AIR FORCE PHOTO" and numbered on the back. 25.4 x 20.6CM with margins.
