The last ship from Bordeaux "le Canton" brought brandies in barrels which got 3# a barrel, imitation Catalonia, those would be worth 50# the good wines of Médoc in bottles..., olive oils. The imitation Catalonia papers that came by the above ship got the right price. The trade of Vera Cruz has been transported here, we have at this time a score of ships in the river and there is no danger of passing our bar above 14 feet of water; in case the wind prevents us from crossing it, recommend to your captains to go to Punta Auton Ligardo which is located between Vera Cruz and Alvarado and which is an anchorage far superior to that of the bay of Vera Cruz... ". - This is followed by a letter printed on the 3rd page extolling the vast outlet of commerce for this country of 850,000 Inhabitants. "The main products of Mexico are gold, silver, copper, cochineal, indigo, campêche wood, vanilla, sugar, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, wool, silk, cotton, linen, hemp, leathers, tortoise shell, etc...
