MERLIN (Philippe-Antoine dit Merlin (de DOUAI) 1754 - 1838 - - Lot 357
MERLIN (Philippe-Antoine dit Merlin (de DOUAI) 1754 - 1838 - Conventional of the NORTH, Minister. Autograph letter signed, from Paris on 8 September 1830, to his niece, back from exile in Belgium. 2pp in-4°: "I had left Brussels, my dear Niece, when your letter arrived there... I thus anticipated the Law which was to reopen the doors of France to us, and I had done it not to find myself in the middle of the movements of which Brussels started to be the Theater, and which took since a character even more serious. I would have had, as you well present it, a great pleasure in receiving you, with your excellent husband, in the place of my Exile; but I will have an even greater one in seeing you again in Paris...Madame MERLIN will not take part in this interview, because she has remained in Brussels to make all the necessary arrangements for our complete removal; but she will be well compensated for it afterwards..."
