General DOMMARTIN relates THE VICTORY OF ROVEREDO of Septemb - Lot 347
General DOMMARTIN relates THE VICTORY OF ROVEREDO of September 4, 1796, to his mother. Victory of the Army of Italy of General BONAPARTE against the Austrian Forces. Autograph letter signed "DOMMARTIN" to his mother in DOULEVANT (Haute-Marne): "BASSANO (Italy) 23 Fructidor Year 4 (9 September 1796). I wrote to you from Trieste, My Dear Mother, by an extraordinary Courier The Victory which you gained at Reveredo and approximately, since this time we still beat the Austrians twice in particular yesterday completely. We have taken from them a total of eleven thousand prisoners, a quantity of flags, all their cannons, bridges, pontoons, & c., One has no idea of such a rout, we are in pursuit of them, and we firmly believe, that from all this imperial army, not six thousand men will escape, who are withdrawing towards Trieste. I am extremely tired, but I must get on my horse. Besides, I am well, and I think I am saving myself for the pleasure of seeing you and embracing all that I hold dearest. Farewell, DOMMARTIN." 1p in-4° with postal mark "Army of Italy" - Elzéar Auguste Cousin de DOMMARTIN, General of Artillery (Dommartin-le-Franc/Haute-Marne 1768 - died in Rosette (Egypt) in 1799)
