Dear Sir and friend... Soliman Ben Arras, your new farmer, has just left my house, I have given him your letter which I have translated for him... He hopes that next year you will give him a flock of sheep. Most of his land is subject to flooding and therefore remains uncultivated. I told him about growing corn after the flood season, he seems willing to work.... There have already been disputes with the Chiry den Ouled Chebel, I was obliged to write to the Kaïd. The Chiry asked him what interest he had in the property of a Christian, what mattered to him whether it was devastated, burnt or not! This man feels his false position and asks to be given a gun, I promised him that with the permission of the Arab office... The Arab chiefs reserve the right to use any small means to prevent my establishment..." (extract from a letter)
