EGYPTOLOGY. Henry Adrien PRÉVOST DE LONGPÉRIER, Numismatist, Archaeologist and a French Curator. (Paris 1816 - 1882). He was the collaborator of the Egyptologist Auguste MARIETTE. Autograph letter signed "LONGPÉRIER" of June 24, 1873. 2pp in-8°. "Dear and learned Brother. Having been obliged to leave early Saturday morning for the Department of Seine et Marne, I wrote to Mr. DESJARDINS who possesses the archives of MARIETTE and all his publications; I found on my return a very complete statement which I am sending to you, pointing out that the whole of the memoirs inserted in the Archéologique review implies a sequence of ideas, constitutes a great work of elucidation, which it would be sufficient to classify by chronological order of subjects to form a treaty. MARIETTE's method is excellent; you have been able to judge it more than once; notably when he read at the Academy the description of the Temple of DENDÉRAH (Egyptian Temple dedicated to the cult of the Goddess Hathor). MARIETTE never forgets classical studies, and he investigates with himself what influence the Egyptian doctrines may have exercised (even when they were only imperfectly understood) on the ideas of the ancient philosophical and literary world.
