BUTHAUD René (1886-1986) French painter and ceramist: Postcard sent to Mr. Germain on July 24, 1905: friendly letter, accompanied by a charming original drawing representing a hunter shouldering his rifle. René Buthaud, born in Saintes, did his first studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, then came to Paris and attended the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1909 to 1914. There he studied painting and engraving and in 1914 he won the first second Grand Prix de Rome for engraving. Since 1928 he has been part of the group of artists whose works are permanently exhibited at the Rouard Gallery. At the 1937 Exhibition, he was awarded an Honorary Diploma. Since 1925, René Buthaud takes part in decorative art exhibitions in France and abroad. From 1924 to 1926, he directed the ceramic factory of the Atelier Primavera in Touraine and since 1931 he has been a professor of decoration at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. Works by René Buthaud can be found in Paris in the museums of Modern Art and Decorative Arts, in the Ceramic Museum of Sèvres and abroad in Brussels, Copenhagen, Munich, Cairo, Detroit, Tokyo, etc... René Buthaud was made a Knight of the Legion in 1937.
