FRANCE Anatole (1844-1924): Reunion of two LAS: 1/An undated - Lot 121
FRANCE Anatole (1844-1924): Reunion of two LAS: 1/An undated LAS, one page in-12: "Dear friend, allow me to recommend Eugène Froment to you for the direction of the newly created engraving workshop at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. You know better than I do that Froment is an engraver of the greatest talent..."; 2/LAS on the letterhead of "La Béchellerie" St Cyr-Sur-Loire, undated (a hand has indicated in pencil 14/5/17, addressed to a "dear madam": very nice letter on the ongoing war. France first gives friendly news about him and Emma and their life at La Béchellerie. Then he gives his opinion on the war and politics: "...Although the English are still stubbornly attempting useless and costly offensives, although our generals are pretending to do something, or to hope that after the offensive which cost us 70,000 men without any result, I hope that our staff will keep quiet. You know better than I do that if Painlevé hit Mangin, he must have kept Nivelle...Many expect a lot from the Stockholm conference and Couchoud himself seems to be paying some attention to it. I think that the English gold will make it fail as it will make the Russian revolution fail after having launched it...". Beautiful and interesting letter.
