VERLAINE (Paul): Dedications. Bibliothèque artistique & litt - Lot 225
VERLAINE (Paul): Dedications. Bibliothèque artistique & littéraire, 1890. In-12 modern mauve jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (cover repaired and lined, a few small traces of wetness). First edition, printed at 350 copies on laid paper, ours one of the 50 copies signed by Paul Verlaine for Henri Rouger. Illustrated with a portrait of Verlaine in hospital garb by Frédéric-Auguste Cazals engraved on wood by Maurice Baud and printed on Japon. Very interesting provenance : Henri Rouger (1865-1912), normalien, agrégé d'histoire, was an eminent poet, who is linked by his style to the Parnassian school. His masters were Leconte de l'Isle and de Hérédia. By the subjects which he treated, he belongs to the small group of philosophical poets, but he is distinguished from them by the richness of the imagination and the concrete genius which he undoubtedly owes to the study of history. A rare and beautiful copy offered by a "cursed" poet to a "forgotten" poet!
