LEGRAND (E.): Macao and Cosmage or the experience of happine - Lot 244
LEGRAND (E.): Macao and Cosmage or the experience of happiness. Editions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, s.d. (1919). Album in-4 square paperback, illustrated cover (spine very worn with tears, covers a little faded, angular lack of paper at the bottom of the first cover). First edition of this spectacular album, the first children's book published by Gallimard, one of the most important children's books of the early 20th century. In total rupture with what preceded in the literature for the children the philosophy of the tale whose printing in typogravure reproduces a handwritten text in facsimile is contained in the high color drawing of stencil by Jean Saudé. "Evoking the degradation of a paradisiacal island by the advent of civilization, a theme dear to the author, Edy Legrand expresses his nostalgia for a life apart from the world and time (.). It is basically the child's eye that this artist-author solicits in the preface (.): "in the pages that follow (he writes) the colours, the smallest objects, the smallest animals have a reason to exist [.] it is up to you to discover them. Look carefully". (Livre mon Ami p. 52). The cover is quite worn (especially the spine) but the inside is fresh.
