ROSS (Alexandre): The Religions of the World, or Demonstrati - Lot 297
ROSS (Alexandre): The Religions of the World, or Demonstration of all the Religions & Heresies of Asia, Africa, America & Europe, from the Beginning of the World to the Present. Translated by Thomas La Grue. Enrichy by all of figures in intaglio. Amsterdam, jean Schipper, 1669. In-12 contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleur-de-lys, spotted edges (head cover worn, corners rubbed, slight foxing, marginal spotting, handwritten bookplate crossed out on title page). A very curious work by Alexander Ross (ca. 1590 -1654), a non-conformist Scottish writer, who was for some time chaplain to King Charles I. It is illustrated with an engraved title-frontispiece and 15 double-page engravings, representing rites, ceremonies, sacrifices, holocausts, and allegorical representations. A good copy.
