Cycling / Petit-Breton / Automoto / Tour. The Argentinian, a - Lot 124
Cycling / Petit-Breton / Automoto / Tour. The Argentinian, as it was also the first nickname of Lucien Mazan, alias Petit-Breton (1882-1917), has given rise to at least three beautiful posters, at Peugeot signed by Mich, at Sturmey-Archer signed by Lochard, and here at Automoto. The great champion is still at the top of his art in 1913, and he takes up a new insane challenge: to win the Tour de France alone, alone against the Peugeot armada of Thys and Pélissier, alone for Automoto of St Etienne, alone with the derailleur, which he plays like a magician. And at the age of 30, he, who at the beginning was a virtuoso of the fixed gear, succeeded miracles with his derailleur; and the expert mechanic that he became and even on the point of almost succeeding in his bet, when a fall on the cobblestones of the side of Dunkerque, obliged him to give up, chewed right knee. He was 2nd in a stage of Paris, and Thys was also going to have problems... Unfortunately, the Argentinean will have to leave, like a broken star. As the graphic designer Louis Mangin masterfully pointed out, there remains a spectacular Petit-Breton, who certainly bowed out, but after having been close to the stars. The eagle eye of the incomparable phenomenon is there, as his untied look. 120X80. Rare large format litho, to be framed, because weakness and small lacks in the bottom. ABE. Framed.
