Olympic Games / London 1948 / Official torch. Official torch - Lot 260
Olympic Games / London 1948 / Official torch. Official torch in aluminium alloy of the Renaissance Games. This spectacular torch of 47cm, carries on its openwork hearth of the Olympic rings, the mention "XIVth Olympiad 1948. Olympia to London with Thanks to the bearer. Indeed come from Olympia where it was lit with the sacred fire, this torch and its sisters will cross, Europe, and thus France, thanks to an unforgettable relay of runners... It is thus the second official torch, after that of Berlin in 1936 (49 nations, against 59 here), and after the second world war. These second Games of London after those of 1908, will be televised, but hardly organized. They will mark nevertheless the big Olympic and world resumption, sealed of the exploits of the Dutchwoman Fanny Blankers-Koen, of the virtuoso Micheline Ostermeyer, of the American Bob Mathias, of Emil Zatopek, the Czech loco (see also: JO 1948), of the Catalan Christian d' Oriola, of the Bordelais Jéhan de Buhan, of the Ariegean Jacques Dupont, of Alain Mimoun, or Marcel Hansenne. These first Games, without the baron of Courbertin (1863-1937), are also the last ones with the artistic competitions (see also: JO 1948, Prouteau). Piece of museum, with many titles.
