Byzantine grenade of Greek fire. Decorated piriform terracotta. L 10 cm. The dreaded Greek fire was an incendiary mixture of unknown composition used in sieges and naval battles from antiquity to the Middle Ages. It burned even in contact with water. Probably petroleum-based, it must have contained pine resin, naphtha, quicklime, sulfur and saltpeter. Eastern Mediterranean. Byzantine Empire to Middle Ages. 7th to 12th century.
