NASA. LARGE FORMAT. HUBBLE TELESCOPE. This irregular galaxy - Lot 269
NASA. LARGE FORMAT. HUBBLE TELESCOPE. This irregular galaxy has all the signs of having been involved in an accident with a bypassing galaxy. Rather than destroying the galaxy, this chance encounter gave birth to a new generation of stars, and probably planets. The right side of the galaxy is in the midst of star formation, as evidenced by the plethora of young blue stars and pinkish nebulae incubating stars. The left side, however, appears intact. It contains traces of the galaxy's former spiral structure, which at one time was undergoing normal galactic evolution. The larger guilty galaxy is at the bottom of the image. The two galaxies collided with each other millions of years ago and are now separated by 24,000 light years. The gravitational struggle between the two galaxies has created patches of higher density gas and dust in both galaxies. This activity has triggered a wave of star formation. This galaxy is a close example of the type of cosmic activity that was more common billions of years ago, when the universe was smaller and galaxies were closer together.Vintage chromogenic print. Numbering in the margin on the front. Legend on the back label. 40,6 X 40,6CM with margins.
