NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Experimental plane D558-2. Douglas Skystreak (D-558-I) was a research aircraft with jet and right wing developed by Douglas for the account of the NACA (ancestor of the NASA) and the US Navy. The project was launched jointly by the NACA and the US Navy in 1945. The program called for a test aircraft for transonic and supersonic flights. The aircraft was developed to reach the sound barrier. Despite problems with its landing gear, the Skystreak reached Mach 0.99 in August 1947.
