GOLDEN COAST. CHARTREUSE DE LUGNY, near CHÂTILLON-SUR-SEINE (21). Letter A.S. Brother GOULARD [Antoine de GOULARD, Carthusian prior of the Charterhouse of LUGNY], Châtillon-sur-Seine, January 13, 1745, addressed to Monsieur BERNARD, "painter-gilder" in DIJON. The transcription was made in modern spelling for a better understanding: "You had promised me to come and work at our church last September. However you failed to keep your word. So I have come to ask you to let me know if I can count on you for next March. I don't want to postpone at all from the beginning of spring. If you refuse, I will take on someone else, I am not short of people who offer themselves. I will wait for your answer as soon as possible by mail to determine myself. I send you my address. I would say to you, besides, that I have here a marble to grind your colors. I wish you a happy new year. Waiting to hear from you, I beg you to believe me with special esteem, Sir, your most humble and most ob. Servant" [The church of this Carthusian monastery had been consecrated in 1203 and remodeled in 1563. At the time of this letter, the Carthusian monks had decided to do some work in their church: to open windows in place of the small Romanesque openings and to redecorate in the Rococo style of the time].
