UNITED STATES. Letter from the city of Richmond, May 10, 1842, from a brother-in-law addressed to Mr. DECAUX in Paris: " ... As for us, we had on March 1, 1837, formed the determination to return to France; I could then realize about two hundred thousand francs, but the financial crisis which still devours the country burst, like a thunderbolt, not even giving me the time to begin the execution of this project. Here all the industries prosper and although business is bad here today, bad business is better than what is called good business in France. The least worker here lives in what would be considered a great luxury at home; fine cloth clothes when they go out, carpeted lodgings, mahogany furniture, good food and above all a rank that they do not have in Europe; here work is honored and all the classes walk together. There is no one who would allow even the President of the United States to treat him cavalierly and refuse his hand when he approaches him. For a long time to come, this will be a country for making fortunes and great wealth: there is so much room... "
