GENLIS (Madame de): Théâtre à l'usage des Jeunes Personnes. - Lot 17
GENLIS (Madame de): Théâtre à l'usage des Jeunes Personnes. Panckouche then Lambert et Baudouin, 1779-1780. 4 volumes in-8 full marbled calf of the time, spine decorated with nerves, red edges. First edition. The set of volumes gathers 24 pieces. A good number of these plays were originally intended for the children of Orleans, which the countess of Genlis took care of. The roles are held by children. Madame de Genlis thus inaugurated a new genre in the theater, a theater made by and for children. In the last volume, the preface specifies that this volume is intended only for the children of artisans and merchants. It goes without saying that none of the plays is without a certain moral of action of which it is the demonstration. Volume I : Agar in the desert ; The beauty and the beast ; The flasks ; The happy island ; The spoiled child ; The curious one ; The dangers of the world. Volume II : The blind man of Spa ; The dove ; Cécile or the sacrifice of friendship ; The generous enemies ; The good mother ; The schemer. Volume III : The ball of children ; The traveller ; Vathek ; The false friends ; The magistrate. Volume IV : The rose of Salency ; The fashion merchant ; The linen maid ; The bookseller ; The true sage ; The portrait. Good copy. From the library of Monsieur Terray, intendant in Lyon (bookplate)
