REVOLUTION - LINGUET: Memorandum to the King by M. Linguet c - Lot 29
REVOLUTION - LINGUET: Memorandum to the King by M. Linguet concerning his claims, currently pending, in the Parliament of Paris. London, Spilsbury, 1787. In-8 modern blond half calf with corners (title page and qq leaves restored, the word "King" crossed out). New edition. Linguet (1736-1794) was a complex personality and a prolific author. After solid studies, he devoted himself to law and became a lawyer, defending famous cases such as that of the Chevalier de La Barre. He continued his career in journalism but his non-conformist ideas forced him to seek refuge abroad. Back in France, he was imprisoned and exiled. The Revolution allowed him to return and offered him the opportunity to play a political role. In the present text, he exposes with some complacency the difficulties he encountered in the exercise of his profession, more particularly during the trial of the Duc d'Aiguillon, (before being disbarred) and those related to his positions in his Journal de politique et de littérature. "I will, as briefly as it will be possible for me, trace the abbreviated version, taking back from my known misfortunes only what it is necessary to say, to make more sensitive the continuity of this chain of injustices (.) which filled (.) these years so cruel for me". Cat. of the History of France, IX, 777. Beautiful copy.
