HOLBACH (Baron d'): Elements of universal morality or catech - Lot 64
HOLBACH (Baron d'): Elements of universal morality or catechism of nature. Paris, De Bure, 1790. In-16 full contemporary green bronze morocco, smooth spine decorated, large gilt detelle framing the boards, int. lace, linings and endpapers of pink tabis, gilt edges (spine very slightly lighter). (6), 208 p. Posthumous first edition, nice impression, on fine paper, given by François-Ambroise Didot. The text is entirely ruled in red ink. "According to the bookseller's warning, this writing composed in 1765 was printed on the manuscript transmitted by the family to the printer. It is to be noticed that this one, G. de Bure, is also the one who drew up and published in 1789 the catalog of the library of Holbach ( ). Besides, the authorship of Holbach announced by the title and the warning was confirmed by the 'Correspondance littéraire' of November 1790. Barbier added in his Dictionary that Naigeon had revised the text. After analysis, R. Besthorn estimates that [this] revision was exclusively stylistic" (Vercruysse). A. Kors ('D'Holbach's coterie') insists on the rarity of this volume (Tchemerzine-Scheler, III, 732. Vercruysse, 1790 A2). A fine copy in a fine contemporary binding, uncommon condition.
