Jean-Paul LAURENS (1838-1921, History painter and sculptor) - Lot 250
Jean-Paul LAURENS (1838-1921, History painter and sculptor) / Autograph letter signed, 3 p in-8, to his pupil Georges Roux (1853-1929, who was to be one of the illustrators of Jules Verne's work) - Rare letter of advice from a master to his pupil: "I don't know if this is the time of the poitrinaires, but I don't care about tendencies, and a subject is never banal, don't be afraid of that, when it has been felt. Yours is very well arranged as a relationship of values and seems to me of a nice sentiment. If in the execution you don't lose this touching note, always easier and easier in the vagueness of a sketch, your painting can produce the impression that you foresee. I send you back the sketch so that you don't get too far away from it. I like the cat, it's home, but this dog is something else, I don't like it. Do what you want with it in another canvas but here it swears and impoverishes everything. Put a hound if you want, but not one of those deformed rats. The movement of your two figures is very good. Half or rather two thirds natures seems to me a good dimension".
