Athletics/Walking/Giffard/Olympic Gamesurnal/Duval/Rollin-De - Lot 7
Athletics/Walking/Giffard/Olympic Gamesurnal/Duval/Rollin-Decour. Two pieces: Rare medal awarded to the 380 walkers having finished in less than 10 days "the fight" on Paris-Belfort (500km). Pierre Giffard, alias Jean-sans-Terre creates this event of promotion of the sport, between its Paris-Brest cycling of 1891, and its Paris-Rouen automobile of 1894, with once again, a noble political back thought, that of the revenge: if one can go from Paris to Belfort, one will be able to go from Paris to Berlin. It will be for a long time, the biggest popular event in the history of sport, with its 1138 registered and 850 starters on Sunday, June 5, 1892, to the sound of the bugle. From the headquarters of the "Petit Journal", located at 61 rue Lafayette, the start was patriotic, the whole race was. And this medal is precisely the one of a competitor, who put himself in evidence on the fight (it was the term). The number 445, will be that of a certain Duval, professor of mathematics at the Rollin College (12 av Trudaine, became Jacques-Decour in 1944), who launched without preparation to brighten up his Pentecost vacations. Miracle, at the end of the first 24 hours, our client is in the lead having covered 159 km... Never seen in France, a road record for an amateur. Injured by his city shoes, he then went backwards until he found a sea bath in Domremy. With sore feet, he finished 49th in Belfort, far from the winner Ramogé. Cheered by all his colleagues on the course, and not only, he will resume his courses one hour after his return to Paris, acclaimed by the whole College. With this medal, he will have the right to a paper cutter. During this time, on rue Cadet, close to the Vermot study, the two winners Ramogé and Gonnet will be performing at a wine merchant's !!! With this medal, you will enter the history. Museum piece. Diameter; 6 cm. Obverse: The newspaper crier of the "Petit Journal" and the name of the recipient, Mr.Duval, signature A.Desaide on the right; reverse, mistletoe and oak leaves, "Honneur-Travail-Patrie, Course à pied de Paris à Belfort, 5-12 juin 1892" (Duval's time). Signature A.Desaide (bottom); b) A canvas print from the "Petit Journal" Illustrated Supplement of Saturday, June 18, 1892, attesting to the popular and military dimensions of this unusual race (41x29). With Stanley's helmet, hunter's, shepherd's or sailor's outfits, a hoop or a rifle in the hand, well framed by the cyclists, the pelotons take the fictitious departure of the street Lafayette copiously paved. Note that 8 out of 10 competitors have canes. By H.Meyer.
